Contemporary Work

New this edition, the Ricard Viñes International Piano Competition will commission a new piano work from a Spanish composer, in order to promote contemporary works and provide an interpretive challenge for the participants.

MANDATORY CONTEMPORARY WORK

Mandatory Piece for the Semifinals – Burlesca

For the first time in the history of the Ricard Viñes International Piano Competition, contestants are required to include a newly composed piece by a living composer in their performance. This year, the selected work is Burlesca, by Catalan composer Marc Migó (Barcelona, 1993).

Commissioned especially for this 26th edition, the piece stands out for its eclectic and theatrical writing. It begins with a simple three-note motif that transforms and evolves into a journey full of contrasts, colors, and personality. With clear references to Catalan music—such as echoes "alla Granados"—Burlesca is a true exploration of character and humor, offering the pianist both technical challenges and expressive freedom.

With this initiative, the competition aims to promote contemporary creation and foster dialogue between performers and living composers, in line with Ricard Viñes' innovative spirit.
